I just had to try one more time!
This time I joined the small free ring to the edge ring closest to it. Again, I should have blocked it, but even without blocking, I can see that the join works for me!

I believe these joins enhance it! This has been a good 'experiment', and now you have three lovely hearts ready to go for Valentine's Day!
I like it better this way. It seems more "firm" if you'll excuse the expression in tatting.
