My first beaded tatting

This is "Twinkling Little Star" from Oh My Stars! by Kaye B. Judt. This is my very first attempt at beaded tatting, and I didn't get the last little bit of chain correct, but I'm still pleased with the way it turned out. I love doing beaded crochet, so I thought I'd really enjoy beaded tatting... I don't! Adding beads totally threw off my tatting rhythm. This little star is only 1 1/4", but it took me four hours to tat! I think I'd rather work on hanky edgings. : )

  2. LOL! Well...that is a LOT of beads for such a small motif.

  3. Looks great! I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one that hasn't tried tatting with beads yet. (Well, maybe I am now.) Everytime I look at all the beads, my confidence dips and I don't do it :( Soon. Very soon.

  4. Haha not bad for a first attempt! I think beaded tatting is its own art form... I don't think I could do it. Kudos for giving it a shot! :-)

  5. Diane, like everything else - it just takes time. I waited a loooooooooong time before I used beads in my tatting. I don't use them very often even now, but I still think beads do add that "something special" to certain tatted things.
By the way, yours turned out great for the first try.

  6. I think it looks nice but I'm glad to hear that you're ready for a hanky...

  7. well... I like your tatted flower. It's great that we don't have to enjoy *exactly* the same things, isn't it? I love using beads in my tatting... Like tatting-marie says, sometimes they are just right for a piece!

  8. very nice Diane for a 1st attempt. yes, beads do slow you down, but as with all things worth doing, practice, practice, practice. I too agree that some pieces call for beads and some are just right without.

  9. Your 'Twinkling Little Star' is very effective, and a great result for your first time adding beads! Well done. Yes, adding beads adds more time to the project, but sometimes it's necessary.

  10. Aha! You did it! Looks great!

If you are not careful you will become like me, who swore two years ago when I started tatting that I would NEVER sully my tatting with a lowly bead!

Look what happened. And I started out as you did - one cute little flower motif with a bunch of shiny, sparking, round, luscious, adorable, sweet, glowing, pretty, colourful, attractive, appealing, glistening ....

    Fox ; ))

  11. At least you managed it! To me, tatting with beads is the tatting equivalent of going to dentist. I'm just happy with the delicateness of the thread on it's own.

I do like how your little flower turned out though!

  12. I like Kay's book Oh My Stars

    I've not tried beads w/tatting.

    Wow - four hours?

The Illinois Lace Day flyer has a beaded-tatting workshop.

I'm signed up and looking forward to learning. Maybe there are easier ways to add beads!

The On Line Tatting Class has a braclet for the next class. I'll have to pay close attention when the pattern is reviewed!

    Enjoy the day

  13. Diana, your post made me laugh! With experience, we learn what we like and don't like.
I learned to do watercolor and also that I did not like it. :)
I haven't tried beaded tatting so you are one (or more) up on me!

  14. Can't believe this is your first beaded tatting! It's still a pretty good job done, Diane.

  15. I have to admit, I do love tatting with beads, but have given away my few pieces. Your star is pretty.

  16. I agree about beads disrupting the rhythm. There must be some way to get back the rhythm -- but I don't know if I'll put the effort into trying.

  17. Really surprised that you had never used beads before in tatting, just love them - okay they do stop the rhythm but worth the effect - I'm hooked on them and one day you will be!

  18. I love your tatting without beads. Your stitches are always so perfect however these beads really throw off that symmetry you achieve with thread and shuttle. I haven't seen your beaded crochet but I think it must be beautiful. Happy week to you...

  19. Yes, you have to plan in advance for the beads. No easy! This is very pretty.
