Miranda's Challenge, round 1

Miranda found some fabric at JoAnn's that looks like tatted doilies! She took some close-ups and challenged readers to tat the design. So...

I put the picture on my desktop and started tatting!

I really think the center of the doily is supposed to have 8 rings, but I like the number 5 and I wanted the doily to lie flat without a lot of pulling and pinning and steaming, so I tatted 10 rings. :-)

I'm using size 20 Lizbeth, color #163, Blue Ice. Dave and I are going to Kankakee later this afternoon. He wants to go to Menards for wood. Maybe I can talk him into taking me to JoAnn's for fabric!

Note: I just read on Miranda's blog that this doily is actually the first three rounds of Mom's Doily by Nancy Tracy. Thank you, Nancy, for sharing your wonderful designs! I hope I've represented your pattern in a way that pleases you.

  1. Very nice. It is a pity that the centers are obscured throughout the print, but judging from the second round, I think you're right about there being 8 rings in the original.

I know what you mean about wanting it to lie flat-- so many of those older patterns required a lot of blocking. I think adding a couple of extra rings to make it lie flat is justified.

  2. Great start! I'm not going to dare attempt this since I haven't tatted in I don't know how many years & I need to re-familiarize myself with all the techniques but it will be fun to see what everyone comes up with : )

  5. This challenge seems to have come to life at just the right time for you, with the M.K. doily just finished, doesn't it?

I love your start, and what a great colour!

I am doing a 12-repeat Amusement doily at the moment. I too prefer things to lay flat straight from the shuttles!
