Oops!

I needed a mental break from split rings. I'm catching on to adding the picot to the second half, but I really have to concentrate on what I'm doing. So today I decided to return to simple rings and chains...

oops! This is a very simple pattern,  "Butterflies" from A Pattern Book of Tatting by Mary Konior, but I managed to mess it up. I wanted to use it for a round doily center. That's not going to work, because I've created a corner! This is not the corner shown in the book, but it doesn't really matter... I wanted this piece for a ROUND doily center, not a SQUARE hanky.

Now I have a decision to make. Should I continue and make this edging for a hanky, or should I fix the mistake and use the edging for the round doily? If I fix the mistake, should I retro-tat, or should I cut my losses and add new thread? What would you do?

  1. You have plenty of shuttles (smile). Put it aside for now, make the round one and then come back and make a hanky edging!

  2. I'd say it looks great! Keep going and do a hanky :) then you can tar some more for a round doiley!

  3. I have missed so many of your posts and now am catching up. The play looks like it was a raging success! Congratulations!! I always am so in love with your tatting. If only I could sit with you and learn. Those butterflies are beautiful. Creative Happy Hearts Dear...

  4. I wouldn't waste this work but cutting.....keep going OR put it aside, make the round one (like Michelle said) and then go back to it.

  5. Decisions, decisions! Cone back to it sounds wise to me.

  6. Either continue and use on a hanky or leave it to one side and start another one, don't waste it. It's too good to waste

  7. Tough decision. I think I would cut it off and add a new thread. That is probably because I don't have that many shuttles and I hate to have all those pieces that are not finished.

  8. You're off to such a good start on a hanky edging, why not finish it? You wouldn't have to sew it on right away - just finish it and set it aside. Then, when you start again on your doily center, you can refer back to it and know what not to do for a round piece.

BTW, congratulations on creating a new corner for this pattern! YAY!

  9. Knowing myself like I do, I would probably cut it off and add thread. I have a hard time going back to finish later if I have a specific project in mind. Nice work anyway!

  10. yea cut your losses, but when adding back thread with the variegated thread sometimes I am careful and choose the color that I want to tie back on. except this one I guess you will meet it again when finishing the circle. I do have several projects that go at same time and good time to go back to it later.

  11. I would continue tatting around and do exactly what you did to the finished end to the opposite end and make it a rounded rectangular shape. then I'd work some motifs around the edges to encourage a circular shape. Then after that. I'd probably finish it off with the butterfly edging. I love this edging. I have a recipe for one like it in my stash of books.

  12. Well, looks great so far. Have you considered adding it to the triangle flap of an origami bag?

Or, continue with square -- start new one for round. That is my 2 cents worth!!!

  14. It's going to be beautiful whichever you decide. However, I HATE to cut out a mistake. I would retro tat to remove the corner and finish the project as intended. I probably would not get back to it if I put aside. I love the colors.

  15. I'm commenting here after seeing the decision you made to attach the edging to the round doily. I just love this pattern (and the colorful thread you're using) and wish I had all four of Mary's books. I only have Visual Patterns, which is a treasure. My only question is how the pattern repeats will work out. I look forward to seeing the finished piece!
