Early morning tatting

Somehow I ran out of time yesterday, and I did not pick up my shuttles at all! However, I did wake up very early this morning and managed to tat around another motif.

I've been using one of my La Cossette shuttles the last couple of days. I think they're beautiful, but I've always been slightly uncomfortable using them. I think it's because I learned with Susan Bates post shuttles and old habits do die hard. However, I've been watching some of Joelle's videos lately and I'm happy to say that I'm starting to get the hang of using a bobbin shuttle! Sometimes watching a video repeatedly helps me learn something new... go figure!

Anyway, as I've been tatting on my Jan Stawasz Masterpiece I've been thinking about what I'll be doing next. All sorts of ideas are spinning around in my head. I know I want to work on something small and showcase my shuttle collection. I know that I have some real beauties in my collection. Some of them are wonderful to use, and others are just pretty to look at. The librarian in me wants to categorize and organize all of my beautiful shuttles. First though, I must finish my Masterpiece!

  1. Firstly, your masterpiece truly is a masterpiece! Just beautiful!
I started with bobbins all those years ago then went on a 15 year post shuttle jag but something about those La Cossette got me to try and I haven't gone back! I'm happy now although I'd love to try one of those bigger bobbin ones. It will be fun to see all of yours!

    1. I wonder if my problems in the past have been because I was using finer thread? The size 20 I'm using now has caused absolutely no problems... or, I'm just getting used to this type of shuttle!

    1. I have ideas! I mainly want to organize them for my own benefit, but why not let others in on the fun?

  3. I'm so impressed by your beautiful, HUGE piece of lovely tatting... giving me itchy fingers to start a large piece of my own! There's something so satisfying in seeing a lot of lace like that... don't you think? Having it draped across your lap as you work... there's something special about that.

    1. I love having the lace on my lap! It makes me feel so elegant, even when I'm in my Saturday jeans and t shirt!

  4. I'm quite amazed at your ability to just sit down 'for a few minutes' and tat. I can do that with some 'easy' knitting projects but not tatting - and especially not in the 'early' morning! I'm much too 'foggy-brained' before 7 a.m.!

I think you will see how very efficient bobbin shuttles are, and Joelle's video is a great example of 'economic movement'. I've often mentioned that I thought bobbin shuttles were the only implements used for tatting! I do use a post shuttle for avoiding finger tatting on single-shuttle split rings, and also rings on rings, but that's another topic!

I can't imagine, however, working on something this large! You are managing it quite well!

    1. I really think it's all in what we get used to. I am finding the bobbin shuttle to be very light, giving me the ability to tat more quickly.

  5. You are getting so close to finishing this mega monster doily, I really admire your persistence! I frequently have the problem of my mind wandering to other projects while working on this doily, which is why mine has been set aside for so long. I'd love to see some photos of your extensive shuttle collection :)

    1. There are days when I have trouble focusing on the doily, but it helps when I can break it down in to do-able chunks!

This link will take you to a short video of Joelle tatting. I think you'll be able to find her other videos from there. Happy tatting!
