Yesterday was a busy day of organizing, cleaning, grocery shopping, and doing laundry... mundane things that need to be done! Since I was a good girl and put chores first, I did not sit down to tat until after dinner last night. Even then, I was so tired, that I didn't finish the one Ice Drop I started until this morning.
I do like this deeper blue. You can't tell from the picture, but this is another one that is a bit loose in the bezel setting. The glass gem was too large for six rings, so I chose to tat seven rings. It's fine while it's hanging on the tree, but the gem pops out easily. I decided a fix was in order!
A search on the Internet led me to an Italian YouTube video about needle tatting with a cabochon. After watching it, I decided to do a little bit of experimenting.
First, I tatted this little piece as a backing. It was not large enough, so I just tied it off and hung it on my tree.
My next attempt was much better!
I like the way the back encloses the cabochon.
This gem was a little smaller than the ones I've been using. It's a little loose in the setting, but I feel like it is much more secure than the blue one. The real question is, can I remember what I did so that I can make more?
Looks like a great technique, so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that the loose blue one might be able to be tightened with a thread run through the rings, then pulled tight and tied on top under the ribbon.
Very informative post! I like that this method makes it secure in the back. Could you just use some glue to make it secure in the front? I'm also assuming these are the kinds of gems used for filling vases. I have a lot amber color ones I'd like to tat around!
ReplyDeleteI can't blame you for being too tired yesterday to finish the icedrop! You're very motivated in getting the 'mundane' things done!
I love these and I too have been noticing my gems were different sized too.
ReplyDeleteWow! Looks like you will have all kinds of beautiful gems on your tree!! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness dear. I love your Ice Drops so much and now you have included a link for needle tatting them! Thank you thank you...too bad I am not fluent in Italian! I shall try to mime one.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I like the backing, good job.
ReplyDeleteJust FYI, you have my Tatted Flurries book which features a section on adding baubles to the middle of a snowflake so you actually have a pattern for doing this sort of thing. :-)
ReplyDeleteFunny you should mention your book, Sharon! I just started pulling all my snowflake books off the shelf last night, trying to decide where I wanted to start. I didn't notice the bauble in the middle until I read your comment. I don't know how I missed that before!
