Too much fun?

It sure is quiet around here now that our youngest grandchildren have gone home. I miss them already!

My fascination with Dorset ring buttons continues, and part of that fascination is trying out new threads! I've never worked with perle cotton before, but I decided to try it out after a tatting friend suggested it. I found this assortment on Amazon. The price was right and the colors appealed to me.

I'm not sure I would use perle cotton for everyday tatting, but I think it works well with Dorset ring button ornaments.

I think I'm going to have to have a set of these, one in each color!

After I finish my set of 12, I'll have plenty of patterns to try out. My new book by Gina Barrett arrived in today's mail There are 67 identified button patterns in this book and there are instructions for variations. I've also joined the Gina-B Silkworks group on Facebook so that I can learn from others. What fun!

I'm not ignoring my "normal" button ornaments. I'm just adding variety to my day. Could it be that I'm having too much fun? Maybe!

  3. Lots of experiments ahead of you, great fun! I have tatted with perle cotton, it’s a bit soft for comfort. But comes in a wonderful array of colours.

  4. I am enthralled with your button ornaments! My Grandmother taught me to tat but am still a beginner. Are there any recommended books for instructions on tatting with buttons? I have one but your designs are so beautiful! I imagine many are of your own design.

    1. I've been tatting for so long that I'm not sure what books would be good for a beginner. There are some very good YouTube videos. For tatting with buttons, just think of the holes as picots to join to. Yes, many of the designs are my own. If you're on Facebook, I highly recommend the Tatted Button Ornaments group. There are lots of free patterns.

  5. How might someone (ok, I mean me.) go about beginning her own Dorset adventure?

    1. Haha! I started with the Gina-B Silkworks YouTube video. I also went to the Gina-B Silkworks web site and ordered a bunch of button kits. I love her new book!
