The Workbasket March 1953

This was a strange pattern to tat, because the center is added last!

I found it a bit difficult to tat the center and add it at the end.

I'm not sure I like the look of this one. It is 5" x 8" in size 20 Lizbeth #170.

If I were to tat this one again, I would design a different center, and I think I would make the bottom length shorter. I'm not sure I like the longer chains at each end either.

However, I really like the design that the joined clovers make on the ends!

Thanks to Tatting Marie for sending me this pattern!

  1. It looks just beautiful.
I can imagine how difficult it was to tat the center last. I did some knitting like that, once, and I didn't have any fun.

  2. Pretty! I really like the look of the clovers too. Is that #2 out of 15 of the Workbasket crosses?

  3. That one is different...like you, I like how the clovers join, that is a pretty element. I would have to tweak a bunch to want tat it a second time, and perhaps before the first, having seen yours and your comments! :-)

  4. I like how the center turned out, it looks good, but do it first instead of last? A person could guestimate the picot length, especially since you've done it once already. I agree, that bottom leg is too long. I think I'd make it with only three diamonds down (2/3rds longer than the arms and top)to be proportional. Those are kind of weird long chains on the ends. Maybe much shorter chains with no picots from the single ring to the clover at the bottom, then a chain with graduated picots that joins back to the base of the same clover, another short chain to the next single ring. It would give it a false ring at the end of each of the arms. Hmm, I think I'm going to have to try this.
I like the color of your cross, even if it's not blue☺

  5. It sounds as though you are busy inventing your own variation of this cross. It does sound fiddly to do the centre last. But the cross is pretty and different.

  6. Lovely colour, it's looks very long and the centre must have been hard, I think I would have done the centre first and then work around it, I little shorter might look just as nice and more compact.

  7. The "chained clover" pattern from Sharon Briggs "Tatted Crosses" is similar in the arms, though very different in the center. If you like the way the tips turned out, you might take a look at that one. Pretty tatting!

  8. I like the look of the bookmark without the center! I like all the diamonds that are the empty spaces!! :)

  9. It may be that the designer found it difficult to figure out a center, then came up with one that nicely solved the problem, but I can see how tricky it would be to tat afterwards! I can also see a doodad there! What's important is that you've preserved a bit of tatting history! Well done!

  10. I think it looks great, but I see what you mean about adding the center. The chains are a pretty feature to the finished cross, but they could be a little shorter, maybe? In any case, it's pretty and I love the yellow!

  11. The first thing I ever tatted was a cros with the center tatted last, I hated it and nearly stopped then and there. I like the suggestion of a doodad too. And yes, absolutely shorten the bottom and those chains. Lovely color!

  12. The first thing I thought of when I looked at the 1st picture is that it needed a doodad in the center. i think that would have made a big difference. And a shorter stem would give it better balance.

Just like you, I love getting feedback!
