Since I can't tat with a broken arm (unless one of you out there in blogland has a secret to share with me), I've decided to do something really bizarre... read my tatting books! My sewing room (a catch all phrase at our house) is a disaster, so I just picked up the first book I saw, Tatting by Lael Morgan. This book, from 1977, was very interesting to read, not because there was anything new or innovative, but because the author is interested in tatting with a variety of materials. She even designed her own shuttle, which is basically a very large Lady Hoare shuttle, to hold her larger "threads." Lael Morgan's inspiration came from reading about the Queen of Romania tatting with gold... a little out of Lael's price range!Since I have quite a fiber stash, I think I may try using some alternative tatting materials, once I'm back in the swing of things. However, I don't really think anything will be able to replace my absolute favorite... hand-dyed thread!

ReplyDeleteLael Morgan is an interesting person! I remember when I first got this book and the day I found her shuttle at a Lace Day in Oregon. I often thought about her fending off bears in the great Northwest with that shuttle. Many years ago, I tried contacting Lael through her email address but never received a response. I've often wondered what happen to her... bears?? One day while reading one of my managed health care newsletters, I spotted an article by....Lael Morgan on earthquake safety. How many Lael Morgan's do you think there are?
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is one I have (how bad is that to not know for sure?) but there is a publication for one-handed tatting. I know Georgia knows where it's from but I don't remember right now who wrote it.
ReplyDeleteLael Morgan...a few years ago, I came across a Lael Morgan shuttle at St. Vincent DePaul's. Of course I bought it - but had no idea at the time of it's history or value. Turned out to be one of those really cool bargains!
