I received a request from my 10-year-old granddaughter, Eva.
In case you can't read the fine print, it says, "I want to learn how to tat." What's a grandma to do?
This morning we purchased Marilee Rockley's tatting class from Craftsy (see link in my sidebar if you're interested), and we set up shop. Eva's tatting supplies are at the top of the photo, mine are at the bottom. Jane, Eva LOVES her Roly Poly bag!
Eva wants to tat like Grandma, so she's pinching the thread between her thumb and middle finger. What can I say? It's easier for me. My hand goes kind of numb when I pinch between my pointer and thumb.
We're still working on winding the thread around her pointer finger the correct way. For now, we're both very pleased that she can manage the flip!
Eva's going to practice making a long chain this week. We're hoping to get together next week for another lesson. Luckily, she has a marvelous teacher online whenever she wants to move forward. Eva loves your class, Marilee!
Fantastic, Diane! I hope I can pass on tatting someday too. Marilee's classes should be a wonderful help :)
ReplyDeleteGood for her!!! I try and try and I can`t get the flip!! I think I`ll stick with my needles!!

Wonderful!!! Congratulations, Eva! We are so excited for you!
ReplyDeleteHow very exciting!!! (for you both!!)
ReplyDeleteMy heart swelled as I read this post. Congratulations, Eva, and a hearty and warm welcome into the tatting fold!
ReplyDeleteWill Eva perhaps be lucky enough to share her new "skillz" with other Young Lacers?
Wonderful. Can't wait for my one granddaughter to want to learn. Kelly - I'll just have to come over and sort your flip out!!!! Can't have you sticking to those boring needles for the rest of your life!!!!
ReplyDeleteShe gor the flip? Wow! I am impressed! Congratulations and welcome to tat-land Eva!
ReplyDeleteFox : ))
Way to go Eva!! And so happy that you will now have someone to share a love of tatting with Diane. I look forward to seeing some 'projects' soon :)
ReplyDeleteI was in grade school when I learned how to tat from my Grandma. Congrats to her
ReplyDeleteI tat like that too! I can get a much better spread with the index finger.
ReplyDeleteWhoo-oo, wonderful that there's a new

This post just about brought tears to my eyes - for several reasons:
ReplyDeleteFirst, there is the adorable 'closed school house' picture with the most amazing statement in 2012 from a 10-year-old, "I want to learn how to tat"! What precious words for a grandmother to read(and be preserved in Eva's own writing)! I believe you've said your daughters haven't taken up the skill, so this has to be a joy for you! I get all emotional thinking about it!
Second, I love seeing the 'crochet hold'! I'll never understand why it hasn't become the 'norm'. Crocheters who see me tat immediately feel less intimidated about tatting, especially when I demo the chain.
Third, the chain (especially using two colors) is the best way to learn how to flip the knot. It's taken 150 years to realize this!
So Eva has all the stars in the universe lined up just right, with Grandma Diane as a personal teacher, and wonderful digital videos by Marilee, plus instant access to tatters all around the world!
Not to mention beautiful wood cases (made by Grandpa) full of beautiful shuttles, many blinged by Grandma, not to mention so many wonderful things tatted by Grandma! And gorgeous thread sitting around everywhere, even in large glass jars! It's like a Tatting Wonderland! Takes my breath away!
That's remarkable! Well, you can initiate a new generation to tatting! :-))Tat's great!
ReplyDeleteThat's WONDERFUL, Diane and CONGRATULATIONS Eva! I've always wished that I could have learned from my grandmother. This will be a summer to remember always!

That is so cool!!! What a blessing! :)
ReplyDeleteGo Eva!!! Someday you'll be making beautiful treasures just like your sweet grandmother! :)
ReplyDelete...I still NEED to dive into that fabulous gift you sent me Diane, and give this tatting a try! :)

This is SO delightful to read! I love the schoolhouse page with Eva's handwritten note! This will be a very special summer for both of you!
ReplyDeleteEva says "Thank you! Grandma and Marilee are great teachers! Tatting is now my favorite thing to do! Also, I absolutely LOVE my roly poly bag!!!"
ReplyDeleteWell done, not easy teaching grand children,
