The two hour split ring

I admit it. I'm stuck!

I'm working on Anne Bruvold's Flying Minor Norwegian Dragon for my grandson, and I'm having a difficult time. Anne's directions are wonderful. My reading and following instruction skills are not!

I was concerned about making picots on the single shuttle split rings, so I left them out. Luckily, I realized that the picots are needed for making the body of the dragon, and I found that making picots on a single shuttle split ring isn't difficult at all!

However, that does not hold true for picots on the second half of a split ring. I have literally been trying to make this work for two hours, and I am giving up for tonight before I get so frustrated that I don't want to finish the dragon. Does anyone have tips for making picots on the second half of the split ring? I'll try any and all suggestions!

  1. He's going to be a stunner! Is there something that you can identify as not working? If you want to Skype for a few minutes, I could try to show you?

  2. The first two ds allow the core thread to slide, but once I add the picot it all locks up. I can see that I am flipping the thread after I have formed the stitch, but not while I'm doing it... so frustrating!

Thanks for the offer of Skyping. Are you available tomorrow? My wrist is worn out tonight.

  3. I messed up the first 3 starts I did on that pattern so I can totally understand!! And I have a horrible time making picots on the second half of a split ring myself(I have done it, but I don't like it). :) So far your dragon looks pretty good!! :)

  4. I place a toothpick (or similar small round object) between the threads where I want my picot to be and then make my next double stitch. The toothpick acts like a space holder. I do have to move the split ring around to where I can pinch the toothpick while making the next double stitch.

  5. Could it be something to do with the way you hold the ring? I know that Jane E etc recommend the 'dead spider' hold, but when I use that I can't do picots on the 2nd half, I don't seem to have enough control. I basically take the thread off after the first half and turn it round. It may not be as quick as the dead spider, but it gives me more control. Hope this helps, the dragon is wonderful! I've tatted it several times.

  6. I also turn the loop around on my hand, that allows me to use my left thumb to hold the picot in place while I tat the next stitch.

  12. Hi Diane,

I made a video just for you. Do you still need it or do you have it figured out by now? Your dragon's going to be great!
