2 more weeks

I admit it... I'm bummed. The doctor said two more weeks in the cast. My shoulder is not loosening up the way he wants it to, and my fingers are getting stiffer. My shoulder exercises have been increased to 8 times a day, and I still have to do my hand exercises for 10 minutes out of each hour. I'm sure the reason I'm not progressing is that I've been back at school, and it's just impossible to exercise for 10-15 minutes per hour while teaching! So, I'm staying home for the next two weeks and exercising as prescribed. I'm carrying around my little clip-on timer, and I've already fit in 3 rounds of exercise since getting home from the doctor's office!

The good news is, I don't have to use the sling all the time (only when my cast feels tight or when I'm taking a long walk), and I'm supposed to try and use my hand more... no lifting, though! I can type, or play the piano, or play the violin... how exciting! I don't own either instrument, but now I can play them... if only I knew how! I know... that's a very old joke! I think I'll just try to tat, knit, or crochet!

  1. Well it's kinda a bad but yet good...at least it's only 2 more weeks and you are staying home to make sure you get better and now at least you can do a little bit of stuff! Hope everything goes smoothly this time!

  3. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! I hope you've been writing down all the ideas you have had over the past several weeks. Because you are going to be one busy lady once you get your mobility back!

  4. Sorry, but we all have faith that you can get through this and come out much stronger. Like Sherry, I hope you have been keeping good notes! I'm glad you were able to take 2 weeks off and work on your exercises. We need you back to normal. Sorry about the piano and violin thing!

  5. Just hang in there, and keep doing your exercises. You're almost done! And if the doctor said you could play the violin - even if you don't have one :-) then surely you could tat. Tatting takes less physical motion than playing an instrument.

  6. Exercise! That's such an icky word. I've got my thumb back because of it, though -- good thing you can take time off to make certain you've plenty of exercise opportunities. It will be interesting to see all your ideas pan out and be presented on your blog!

  7. Poor Diane, but hang in there, girl, the 2 weeks at home, exercising, should make all the difference! I used tatting as an exercise tool when my right wrist was in a cast last year.

  8. Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone! I know I made the right decision to stay home. I can tell that I really needed the increased shoulder exercises, and the puffiness in my fingers seems to be going away a little. I'm sure all will be well in the end... I'm just a little impatient!

  9. You are almost there and just think of how wonderful it will be when the cast comes off. It is better that it heal properly so you do not have any problems later on.
