Hanky!

I finished my hanky today!

It was really easy to keep track of where to join using safety pins. It took me 35 minutes to pin and attach each side... not bad!

The hanky is from Handy Hands. The thread is size 20 Lizbeth, Springtime #115.

The pattern is Handkerchief Edging No. 6 from The Craft of Tatting by Bessie M. Attenborough.

I single crocheted around the edge of the hanky. I attached the edging on the second round, which was single crochet through the back loop only.

I think it looks pretty on both sides!

  1. It looks more than pretty. Love it. I've never thought to use size 20 on a hanky - usually use size 80 which makes it a long, long job. Looking at yours I actually prefer the size 20 and I also like the crochet idea too.

  3. Beautiful edging, and really like that crocheting idea! It adds to the design and looks great on both sides, plus, in the far distant future, the tatting could be released by merely pulling out the crocheted chain! I'm impressed that the corners are right on the mark! And that's one of my favorite Lizbeth colors! I wonder if the youngsters today have seen many handkerchiefs!

  4. Your hanky is beautiful! The crochet method you used looks so neat. Very smart to attach with safety pins first!

  5. So neat and pretty! I've seen crochet headings for tatted edgings in books, but never tried it. Of course, you've gone a step further in using crochet to attach the tatting. Really good job.

  8. Very lovely. One of these days I'll get the hang of thread crochet and give this technique a try.

  10. Love your tatting & crochet combo -- they work so well together, along with the cheerful colourway !
I have used crochet-in-back-loop for its lovely effect ... prefer it to normal crochet on top chain. Although it takes a bit more patience, it adds interest to my crochet process ;-)

  13. I hope that hanky gets some use, using crochet and size 20 tatting it will be sturdy and should last a very long time. Well done.
