Starting over

Well, I chose to quit the pattern that wasn't working for me. I will get back to it some day, just not when I have a deadline!

I chose doily #4 from Tatted Fashion by Teiko Fujito. I haven't tatted this particular doily before, but I have finished a similar one in the book.

Round 1

Round 2

Round 3
This pattern is working out so much better for me!

My new Sunlit shuttles arrived a couple of weeks ago, and I'm very happy with them! Since I have so much going on right now, I decided to check out how much thread the shuttle would hold.

I happened to have a ball of size 3 Lizbeth on the table next to my chair, so that's where I started. Silly me... I forgot to measure how much thread I used! I think it was about 4 yards. Anyway, this is how much I was able to tat with one shuttle full. The pattern is "Flower Fragment" from A Pattern Book of Tatting by Mary Konior.

Since the thread is so large, and every little thing shows up, I decided to use front side/back side tatting. I'm very proud of the fact that I was able to keep track of what I was doing! ;-)

However, I don't think I'll be using the Sunlit shuttles for size 3 thread. I would spend all my time winding shuttles!

The Starlit shuttles, on the other hand, hold plenty of thread to complete this pattern! There's even a little thread left on the shuttle.

Now that I've finished with this pattern, I'll have to decide what to do with the rest of the size 3 thread. I really prefer finer threads. Although the thread is nice and smooth, the size felt a bit like tatting with rope!

  1. The doily is looking good so far,
Size three yes after tatting perfect quilting it would feel like rope,
Lovely flower fragment and putting tow together makes it even larger.
Hope the doily works up quickly

  2. Ah, good for you in knowing when to quit! I like your second doily, it has wonderful open spaces that will show the table off well. If you keep using the thick thread for a while, it stops feeling like rope!

  3. Yea, a mast lanyard for sure! I cannot imagine using #3!

So, is the pic good on this Sunlit? Folks say they hold as much thread as Clovers. I am curious and of course have ordered a few just to try them out...I never learn!!!

  4. I like the size 3 for making bookmarks from edgings that would ordinarily be "too fine." I also like it for window hangings...I've made a few "snowflakes" that I hung in my office window that I can see from the parking lot at work as I approach my building. It is nice to see tatting on approach!

  5. The new doily is coming along great! fun to watch it grow seems so fast when pictures are just put up there like magic! I am going to try that Lizbeth size three looks like fun I so want to see it for my self! Susie mentioned making snow flakes and that sounds like good idea.

  6. Nice start on the new doily. Sometimes you just have to know when to stop and try something else, no matter how bad you want to do it.

  7. I like your new doily! I like size 3 for embroidery work on my crazy quilting, but it is a little too thick for my tatting preference.

  8. You re making great progress on the new doily! You will have it done in no time, without all the stress! Thanks for the comparison of the shuttles. It's great that we have so many choices! And size 20 is my favorite size thread these days, although it was size 30 and 50 in the past. I have to admit I don't venture into the very fine numbers!
