Grandma's Sewing Camp 2010

My eight-year-old granddaughter, Eva, has been wanting to learn to sew on a sewing machine. Today seemed ideal... hot, humid, yucky outside, but nice and cool inside! We raided Grandma's stash (yes, believe it or not, I have a fabric stash), and started with a practice piece. Eva caught on very quickly, so we decided to make an apron!

The bottom half went very smoothly...

as did the rest.

Straps are a little harder, so I finished those for Eva.

And here is my new little seamstress showing off her new apron!

  2. Awesome job Eva!!!!
I loved sewing as a kid and I would still do more, but my old machine broke and a new one is off in the future somewhere.
I never made an apron, but I did all the mending for our family cuz' my mother who couldn't sew a straight line or much of anything. Have fun! :)

  8. WOW!!! A terrific Grandma and a super fast learner grand-daughter! That apron is WAY cute!

I was 10 when my Gran taught me to crochet. I still remember her teaching me and I still crochet- almost 50 years later. She gave me a treasure- as you did today for youe DGD.

  9. I feel so inadequate. Fortunately MY daughters had a Grandma like you; and, they all learned to sew. I learned to baste, and make a straight stitch on a machine and that is about it….sigh

This is a wonderful memory for Eva. Bekah and I have lots of different sorts of memories; but, no sewing. Her Mom taught her though…and that is great.

I'm glad to that you documented the day with photos..be sure to have copies in a safe place.

    hugs, bj

  11. Wonderful, she will definitely have this memory forever. My grandmother thought me sawing when I was 8 too, on her very old non-electric sawing machine. I will never forget it, best memory ever!
    Great job Eva!!!
