Practicing picots without a gauge

After seeing Tatting Marie's gorgeous tatting at our last Tollway Tatters meeting, I decided to try tatting without a picot gauge just as she does. My picots are not consistent, but I guess that just like everything else, it takes practice!

Another thing I need to practice is reading patterns! I goofed on the very last ring. Yes, I checked and double-checked before closing the ring, but I didn't see my mistake until I was sewing in the ends. Sigh! I guess I'll have to try this one again.

The pattern is Maria from Tatted Bookmarks - cross-shaped by Lene Bjorn. I'm still working with the size 80 Lizbeth. I do love Peacock Blues!

  1. Beautiful in size 80! I love it when a pattern is so familiar it's an old friend :)

  4. I tried to use picot gauges and gave up with the clumsiness.
Your picots look really good....just like mine! ;)

  5. I never used a gauge for my picots - I have always just judged by sight. If they are not all exactly perfect, that is okay. That just goes to show that it is "hand made" and as close to perfect as one can make it. That is my story and I'm sticking to it!

  6. I find using a picot gauge slows me down too much, though I use them on very long picots. I don't think the eye picks up small differences in picot size. Pretty cross! My eye doesn't pick up that mistake either.
