The say, "Every girl needs a Boye!"

But, did I really need 7 of them? No! However, when I saw them advertised in PieceWork, I just had to have them! How often do we see a matched set of shuttles, other than Clovers? I don't think these are for everyone. I really don't like tatting with Boye shuttles. Yes, they are larger than Clovers, but for me the point is totally useless... too big! It gets in the way, and it's terrible with fine threads. The Boye shuttles, at least the newer ones, tend to have rough edges that snag the thread. I know... get out an emery board and smooth them out! If you're like me and just have to have them as part of your shuttle collection, you can find them at Lacis.com.

I found my King Tut thread yesterday. I love the color, and as you can see, it tats up a little larger than the Sulky... 1 3/4" long. This particular one will not be shuttlefied... I shouldn't tat when I have a headache... I couldn't see that I didn't close the rings completely until it was too late! I will be making a matched set to send off to Chris Hinton at The Shuttle Shop... as soon as a good strong frost hits so that I'm not dealing with all this sinus nonsense!

Update: I just looked on the Lacis site, and I do not see the Boye plastic shuttles listed! Could they be sold out already?

  1. Get more for your groan:

When she's rolling in the Clover, every girl needs a Boye.

    I couldn't stop myself... Maebh's fault entirely.

  2. Oh, good, they're sold out -- now nobody can force me to have one! I looked closely at your photo, but don't see any mis-closed ring. Interesting that the King-Tut is bigger than the Sulky. Now I'm REALLY looking forward to getting the Sulky!

  3. I've been looking at these shuttles for a while because, like you, I like any shuttles that come in sets of multiple colors :) On Lacis it has said 'not yet available' for ages.. But now they're suddenly sold out? Hm...

  4. Yes, you needed 7 :) I like to have them just to "have" them too, though I agree that they are too big.

  5. Ola! querida amiga,
    Daiane

  7. I'm not fond of the plastic Boye shuttles either. I have a few colors for my collection but I really hate tatting with them. I hate the Boye metal ones even more! I see a few colors here that I don't have, but that's okay. I'm only buying shuttles I really really love these days! (and can afford)

  8. I have some too; however, the quality isn't the same as the older boye shuttles.

    I agree, collect them!

  11. Boye shuttles are available at Handy Hands. I got an email from them last night and I got a set too. My reason is I remember getting a red one from my Grandma when I was learning to tat. Now I know they are likely not the same as the originals I thought I would give them a chance. Also got some thread and a new book. I dont need any of it but I cant resist.

  12. So far I only have one shuttle that is for "collecting" and not tatting- and that is because I got it thinking I would love it and I HATE tatting with it.

Have not gotten to the "must collect shuttles" stage yet- if I buy a shuttle (and I have bought LOTS) it is to use them. I like having lots of shuttles available when I get the urge to start something new.

  13. Just noticed on the Handy Hands site that the Boye shuttles are there in all the colors :-)

I especially want the yellow one! When I used to buy my tatting supplies from the local variety store (ages ago!) they had a yellow one (original, which would now be vintage) and since I didn't know better I didn't buy it - dummy me! The old ones didn't need smoothing, either - they were nice and smooth the way they were made. My early tatting was looser than how I tat now, so at the time the point was perfect for my joining. Nowadays I prefer Clovers most of the time, but I still use my Boyes. I've gotta go buy that yellow one now...for which I've waited about 20 years :-D

  14. Just have to add, that after seeing the new Boye shuttles in actuality...my opinion is, quite honestly, they're dreadful! I'm sending the ones that I ordered back. Guess I'll treasure my original Boye's more than ever, now.
