I finished my Dusty Blue Spinning Wheel glass mat, and I think it's really pretty! The thread is Oren Bayan size 50. I guess I really don't understand thread sizes, because this is the same size as the ones I've tatted in size 20 Lizbeth, 5 1/2". Oren Bayan thread is much softer than Lizbeth, so I don't think it will work well for snowflakes. However, it does make a pretty doily!
As I've mentioned before, I love Rita Richmond's shuttles! (Shuttle by Design)
I filled both shuttles, and as you can see, I have plenty of thread left. I do like tatting the Spinning Wheel (Tatting with Visual Patterns by Mary Konior) with two shuttles. I find it's easier to carry my tatting with me, and I prefer switching shuttles to using the shoelace trick.
If I finish an Ice Drop each day between now and Christmas, I should have plenty to decorate my own tree as well as enough to give away. Besides, I have some more beads I'd like to try!
I agree I really never use shuttle and ball. The thread is beautiful and makes very nice wheel love it. Along with your snowdrop.
ReplyDeleteThread sizes seem to be different in different countries. Altin Basak 50 is the same (for me) size as most size 30 threads. Oren Bayan 70 ....I think it was 70.....seems to be very, very tiny, smaller than 80. I just tat and enjoy. :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree! Plus, we all seem to have a different tension when we tat, so it's difficult to judge the final size. It's so much fun to try different threads, especially with the same pattern. Luckily, most of what I tat doesn't require a specific size. The only time I get hung up on size is with bookmarks. I really only like bookmarks in 70, 80, or 100, otherwise they're way too bulky.
DeletePretty mat. And very pretty shuttles, but they do look huge!
ReplyDeleteI do like them, but I'm afraid you would think they're too big. I know how you love your small shuttles!
DeleteIt is very pretty. Yes, it's a bit confusing that sizes are not completely consistent between brands. Your spinning wheel mats can certainly demonstrate that.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, I do like oren Bayan thread but no good for snowflakes, not sure about the thread numbers their 50 is a no 20 ?
ReplyDeleteI finished my spinning wheel and it's scheduled for Wednesday but I must go back and change the book, I put the wrong book the pattern came from, that's having all her books you forget which one.
Another great snow drop
I forgot beautiful shuttles
