Looking for your input

Now that I've finished bookmarks for the Harry Potter club members, I'm working on bookmarks for Christmas in the Village in December. I have five ready to go. My goal is to have at least 24, many more if possible. I'm going to stick with the Curds & Whey pattern from Tatting with Visual Patterns by Mary Konior. I like the way it looks, and I'll have plenty of variety with the colors I have on hand.

I have a price in mind for these bookmarks. The bookmark sleeves cost just under 20 cents each. I have no idea how many bookmarks can be made from one ball of crochet cotton, but the thread cost is pretty much minimal. My question to you is, how much would you charge or be willing to pay for one of these bookmarks? I want to make sure I'm not way off base with the price I have in mind. I value your input!

  1. Where did you buy the bookmark sleeves? Its so hard to gauge cost...how long do they take to make?

    1. I found the bookmark sleeves on Amazon. They cost less than 20 cents each. It takes me about two hours to make one bookmark. I'm sure I'll get faster as I go!

  2. I sell mine for $10. Yours are nicer so $12?

  3. Curds and whey works well with variegated thread. I can’t advise you, but I’m interested in the answers.

  4. I've never sold anything I made, whatever the craft, but if I did I wouldn't focus on the price of the materials that much. There's a "saying" among bag makers (sewing) claiming that a bag should cost about the amount of the supplies times 3. I don't really agree with that; and I especially wouldn't say that the theory can be applied to tatting as it requires MUCH more time than sewing. I think $10 is a good suggestion. I would be willing to pay that amount for your lovely bookmark, and it's a round price, + it makes the item affordable, people can buying more than one and gift them.

    1. Sorry for the grammar mistake, I changed my sentence half-way, and apparently overlooked the corrections that it implied :(((

    2. Haha! I've found many grammar mistakes as I blog or leave comments. Sometimes my fingers and brain just are not in sync! Thanks for your response!

  5. I think it depends on your market. I would charge $10 - $15.
    Beautiful bookmark.

  6. At least $10 - $15, especially since your bookmarks are so well presented in those sleeves. Maybe more? If the materials were free, how much would minimum wage be for the time you put into the bookmark? For a larger item, minimum wage would be more than anyone would be willing to pay, but for a bookmark, at least $10-15 sounds reasonable.

  7. Good question I feel the others have judged it well. I don't have a talent for that I feel I undercut or charge too much most of the time😀 but one thing you could do is slip your name and year inside since you never see that or can sign lace😊

    1. I didn't think about slipping my name and year inside the sleeve. Thanks for the idea!

  8. I charge $75/hour for my time as a Professional. And I'm cheep here! That said, it is important to keep the item affordable. If you have advance information on how people pay for things, price point of items by other crafters, and how much any food for purchase is, you might guess better. I usually ask $20 as that is the bill ATM gives out. If things aren't selling and it's allowed, I'll start a "sale" time at the end of each: day, hour, event, etc.
    Good luck!
